Ruth was a pioneer in the field of leprosy control and treatment, and where grateful patients would often offer gifts of eggs and fish wrapped in banana leaves to keep them fresh.
Ruth first travelled to Uganda in 1947 and lived there until the mid 1970s as a nurse and midwife. Many of her stories are full of joy and laughter, music and dancing but others describe tragedies that left Ruth relying heavily on her faith to strengthen her. During the latter part of her years in Africa, Uganda was ruled by General Idi Amin and Ruth experienced, first-hand, the difficulties and dangers of daily life under his dictatorship, meeting him personally on several occasions.
Ruth’s love for Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, shines through and you will find yourself chuckling aloud at her heart-warming and often humorous stories.
